'Riveiro was extremely upset'

Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro is reportedly upset with the club's management over the decision to hold their pre-season training camp in Tunisia.

The reigning Egyptian Premier League champions are currently in Tunisia as they prepare for the upcoming 2025/26 season. The 12-time CAF Champions League winners are expected to remain there until July 26.

Riveiro, who joined the club in May from South African side Orlando Pirates, is in the process of shaping his squad as he aims to make a strong impression following the team’s underwhelming performance at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Ahly defeated Stade Tunisien 4-1 in a friendly on Monday and are scheduled to face another Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 side, CA Bizertin, as part of their pre-season program.

Despite the positive result, the 49-year-old coach is reportedly displeased with the choice of Tunisia as the camp location.

According to Journalist Medhat Shalaby, Riveiro had hoped to hold the pre-season in his native Spain, where he believed conditions would be more favorable for preparation.

"Al Ahly had agreed to hold a training camp in Spain, and the Spaniard Riveiro wanted to hold the camp in his country, especially since the atmosphere in Spain is completely different from that in Tunisia at the moment," Shalaby said per Elwatan News.

"The Spaniard, Riveiro, after learning that the camp would be held in Tunisia, expressed his great anger and was extremely upset.

"The Al-Ahly management convinced him and told him that the Etoile Sportive du Sahel club would cover the costs," he added.

"In the end, Etoile Sportive du Sahel apologized, and the two friendly matches for Al-Ahly club will be held against both Stade Tunisien (already played) and Bizertin."
