Swallows legend: We are Soweto giants again

Former Moroka Swallows star Steve Sekano says he can proudly call himself a legend now that they have changed back to their original name.

The Birds will be able to use their iconic name again for the first time in about eight years, something that caused financial implications.

Sekano says he is glad that his beloved Swallows will now get to be called Soweto Giants again due to the weight and history that is carried by the original name.

"I'm very happy, we talk history now," Sekano tells KickOff.

"The Swallows FC name carried no history. Now that it's Moroka Swallows we can talk of all the past players.

"Now we can talk about the original Soweto derbies because it's Moroka Swallows.

"The fact that it's been there since 1947 tells you the whole story.

"We can't put the rich history of Moroka Swallows and Swallows FC in the same sentence.

"Now they deserve to be called Soweto giants, now we can call them The Birds.

"The players that they have brought in, well so far so good, you cannot be happy with new signings until you see them play a match for the club.

"What is good is that at least they are signing, they are showing a way forward now.

"It shows something better is coming because of the coach [Steve Komphela] as well.

"For the fact that he is a coach, I think Komphela is the right man to take Swallows back to its glory days.

"He is a qualified coach, he is a coach with morals, he is a coach who wants to achieve things."

Sekano says the only thing missing now is for the club to rope in one of its legends who understands the history of the club.

"That's a fact. When supporters see somebody who used to play for the team for a long time it motivates them.

"It also helps the head coach to understand the history of the team better."
