What's next for Swallows?

Given the deafening silence from Moroka Swallows, KickOff has the latest on what could be the future of the once-mighty Soweto giants.

Following well-documented financial troubles at Swallows, which saw them nearly expelled by the PSL after they could not honour two Premiership fixtures last season, the Soweto club eventually sold their top-flight status to Marumo Gallants in the off-season.

The financial situation appeared to be at the worst for the Dube Birds, as they could not buy back Gallants' Motsepe Foundation Championship status.

Dondol Stars were initially linked with the purchase of Siwelele Sa Marumo's MFC status.

However, after Dondol sold their ABC Motsepe League status to Tshwane University of Pretoria (TUT), Leruma United stepped in and bought the second-tier status from Gallants.

There are question marks on whether Swallows would continue to exist in the lower ranks of South African football.

As things stand, this website has been reliably informed that the once-mighty outfit could be folding operations altogether.

According to a source familiar with the behind-the-scenes goings-on at Swallows, the writing is on the wall that the club could cease to exist professionally, as things stand.

"As you know, the supporters have asked the previous owners to relinquish the Swallows entity and naming rights," a source close to the situation revealed.

"Of course, not without a price. The supporters have asked the previous owners of Swallows to name their price.

"Their main aim is to raise the funds within themselves, through donations, individually and from other interested organizations.

"The supporters feel they can't let such a great club, with such a rich history, die and they are determined to revive the club from the lower league structures."

KickOff contacted Swallows' former lawyer Leruma Thobejane on whether the club would still operate professionally.

"I represented the owners when they sold their [PSL] status. Whether they are going to compete in the lower leagues, I don't know," Thobejane said.

"I don't have any new information [regarding their whereabouts]."
