Shongwe: PSL referees are too inexperienced

Kaizer Chiefs legend turned football analyst William Shongwe has identified what he feels is the biggest issue to the substandard of refereeing.

With just three rounds of fixtures played, already two match officials have been removed from the referee's panel.

Shongwe believes young up-and-coming referees are promoted too soon and rushed to the big stage.

"VAR can be the solution to this problem we are currently facing because it can minimise all these mistakes," Shongwe tells KickOff.

"Though it has its problems, even in countries where there is VAR, people are still making noise about some of the decisions.

"But that said, the VAR can make things better.

"So far in the PSL, we have seen mistakes that are too obvious and too blatant.

"With VAR I'm sure things can improve.

"The problem is the decline of the number of experienced referees who can cover the distance and stay close to the action.

"Most of those experienced referees are retiring from the game because of the age factor that comes into the picture for some of them.

"Hence you see those who are from the SAB League, ABC Motsepe League being promoted in huge numbers.

"They are being promoted too quickly before they are even well established.

"They are being promoted before they even garner enough experience.

"This causes these young referees to struggle on the big stage like the premier division.

"These inexperienced referees tend to overreact in situations where they could have exercised better discretion.

"The promotion of young and inexperienced referees is a lot higher than it used to be."
