SAFPU saves the day for Swallows

The South African Football Players Union (SAPFU) has revealed what made Moroka Swallows players abandon their 10-day strike and agree to play their match against SuperSport United last week.

Following the Dube Birds' 2-1 loss to SSU on Friday, Swallows coach Steve Komphela revealed in the post-match press conference after the game that his players downed tools and engaged in a go-slow strike due to unpaid salaries.

The union's vice president Tebogo Monyai has now confirmed that the Swallows players have received their salaries.

"Swallows yah they have paid them their monies, I got the voice note from the Swallows management saying they have paid their players. We spoke to the players and indeed all the players have been paid," Monyai tells KickOff.

"On Thursday, we met with the Swallows players at the training ground at Sturrock Park. We discussed their problem, remember Sturrock Park is about 500m away from the Union's offices," he said.

"So we went there we met them, and we discussed with them the possibility of them not going to honour that game. And after the consultation with the players, we also had some consultation with the club management and league.

"There's also an agreement that we made with the club management, that they are going to pay the players the following day after the game. Which was Saturday. So together with the coach Steve Komphela, we had to convince the players to honour the SuperSport United game.

"The players did not want to play the match, the Union also played a role. They played because we had an agreement with the management."
