Nyatama expands on Swallows' tactics after Chiefs win

Swallows caretaker coach Musa Nyatama has expanded on the tactics they used to beat Kaizer Chiefs on Monday afternoon.

The Birds beat Amakhosi 2-1 thanks to goals by Gregory Damons and Bongani Sam, who restored their lead after Christian Saile Basomboli had equalised for Chiefs.

Nyatama revealed that part of their plan was to put pressure on their former defender Njabulo Ngcobo.

"Ja you know second-half I was not happy with some of the things, we could not press, especially on the side of Ngcobo and I must say a game of two halves but I'm also happy with the three points from the boys," Nyatama said on SuperSport TV.

"You know the boys showed character today and ja they stuck to the plan. We were saying let's deny them the space behind us.

"And you could see how we were moving, we kept the shape, especially with Kwanda (Mngonyama) and Keegan (Allan), unfortunately Keegan had to come out in the last minute but hopefully he's fine," he said.

"I'm not sure about his situation but I saw him walking to the change room, I just hope he's fine. But ja great performance from him and Kwanda, a very good pair, with Nico there on the right, he kept (Ashley) Du Preez at bay, even (Bongani) Sam."

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder praised Bongani Sam for his tactical discipline also and revealed that they wanted to use the space behind Sifiso Hlanti, also a former Swallows player, as it was the case in their opening goal.

"Him (Sam) also getting a goal, he kept possession, we said on our left we must be consecutive a little bit and play from the right and you could see how we scored our first goal. We got it from out right side where we wanted that space behind (Sifiso) Hlanti," he said.

Swallows all but secured their Premiership status for next season, as their second straight win took them up to eighth on the log, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Nyatama, however, was not fully aware of their current position and insisted they are not yet safe from relegation and to get another win in their last two games to be home and dry.

"We know we're not safe, we're still down there but this is a big win for us, a six pointer and we're hoping in the next two game we also get another win. We take it one game at the time, it's very difficult down there but at least those teams they are playing each other down there, we'll see, (they'll) cancel each other," he added.
