Komphela flexes muscles at Swallows

Steve Komphela's Moroka Swallows will welcome AmaZulu to Dobsonville Stadium on Friday evening chasing the benefit of spending the weekend sitting in the comforts of third place.

With Friday's game (19h30) the only league fixture on the cards it presents Komphela with the perfect opportunity to leap into third place from sixth.

Third place and 13 points as the quarter mark bell rings at seven games will be satisfactory for Komphela in his new job.

Komphela only joined Swallows during the off-season after walking out at Mamelodi Sundowns where he wasn't the man in charge with Rulani Mokwena calling the shots.

A slow start that had The Birds picking a single point out of six had the former Bafana Bafana captain calling for patience in the project.

"Results are always results but what is important is to see your team grow to a level where you feel it can be competitive.

"I'm sure you would also testify that one match can never make a team.

"Two matches will never make a team.

"A hell of a process and it is a journey that we need to be very patient with because if you don't understand it then frustration will creep in, and you will start not seeing what exactly you are trying to build towards.

"The process of giving confidence to players to play goes beyond just saying it and training it.

"You must be patient because we intend to play than just kick the ball.

"You always pray that it clicks fast," said Komphela at the time after two league games.

Fast forward to six games into the season and Swallows have won three out of the last four and host an AmaZulu team that has won two of the last three.

Usuthu – who could also go up to third place – have also started the new season with a new man calling the shots in Pablo Franco Martin.
