'Jali wanted only to stamp his authority'

Former Orlando Pirates star Benson Mhlongo has dismissed suggestions that there was any malice in Swallows midfielder Andile Jali's tackle that led to a red card against Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 clash on Saturday.

Jali who recently moved to Moroka Swallows from Sundowns received his marching orders after a studs-up tackle on Teboho Mokoena in the 7th minute.

Mhlongo felt that Jali's desire to make a point to his former side may have led to his reckless challenge.

"I think anxiety got the better of him," Mhlongo tells KickOff.

"When you are too focused on proving a point, you tend to make this kind of mistake.

"Knowing him personally, he is the guy that gives his all when he is playing.

"I think he wanted to win the game by all means. It's an honest mistake I must say.

"The intention was not to kick him or to break him, but he only wanted to stamp his authority.

"Playing against a good team you will always feel that the pressure is on you to prove a point.

"Result might have been different if Jali stayed on the pitch. He is an influential player.

"After his dismissal, Swallows lost strength in the midfield. We would be talking a different story had he finished the game.

"There is no need for Swallows to fine Jali for his actions though because as a coach in a player like him, you know you've got a man.

"You know you have somebody who will fight for you.

"I know Steve (Komphela) will get him back to his senses."
