Frustrated Hunt insists substandard DStv Prem needs 'reboot'

Frustrated SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt insists the DStv Premiership needs a complete reboot to solve oversized playing squads and the constant selling of PSL club statuses.

Hunt has undergone a resurgence in his managerial career after impressively guiding Matsatsantsa to a third-placed finish in the league and as a result has been nominated for the Coach of the Season award.

The decorated tactician implored a reset for the DStv Premiership while highlighting numerous issues that may be undermining the standard of South African football.

"I think football in South Africa needs a reboot," Hunt said at the SuperSport United Player of the Season awards.

"From everything, from playing squads being too big in making them smaller to having to stay at one ground. It needs a reboot.

"This name change thing as well, you cannot be doing it, if you buy a franchise you need to stay there and be named whatever the [club's] name is.

"Like if the club is [Bloemfontein] Celtic, you can't then become [be named] Royal AM, it needs to stay Celtic.

"If it's Wits then it needs to stay Wits University.

People associate themselves with names, brands. I mean, where do [Marumo] Gallants play, where do they come from, no one knows.

"I think it [DStv Premiership] needs a big reboot and I want to say let's get solutions and find a way and put our heads together."

Former 2016 league champions Bidvest Wits are no more after selling their PSL status to become rebranded as TTM, then Marumo Gallants who were relegated to the second tier.

"Let's take the game again [to a high level]. When the PSL started with this new sponsorship with MultiChoice it was like a reboot.

"Sometimes you need to keep doing that, but let's see."
