Hunt explains why Ronwen Williams should NOT be Player of the Season

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained why he wouldn't pick former Matsatsantsa captain and current Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams, or any other goalkeeper for the Player of the Season award.

The Bafana Bafana captain has had a sensational season with new club Mamelodi Sundowns, having joined at the start for the season.

Williams is in pole position to for the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season, after accumulating 18 clean sheets and in doing also set a new record for most clean sheets in a single season, previous held by retired Bafana  shot-stopper Moeneeb Josephs.

However, it's not a good sign for a club's goalkeeper to be awarded the Player of the Season award, according to Hunt.

"Ronwen? I don't think a goalkeeper should win Player of the Year, no chance," Hunt told journalists.

"That means your team has been struggling. They've been defending.

"I think he [Ronwen] has had a magnificent season, I just don't think a goalkeeper should win player of the year. I think he's been brilliant, but that's not a good sign is it? A goalkeeper winning player of the year, with the team they've got? "

"Mokoena has been the player if the year for me.

"If your goalkeeper is winning Player of the Tournament in the World Cup, do they win? I just don't see it."

Hunt was speaking at the SuperSport United Media Day ahead of a crucial DStv Premiership encounter against Kaizer Chiefs to be played on Saturday at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

SuperSport are currently in third place on the Premiership table and will come up against an Amakhosi side as equally motivated to secure continental football.

Kick-off is 15:00.
