Virgil Vries has Kaizer Chiefs teammates' support, says Bernard Parker

Vries has had a turbulent start to life at Naturena since joining at the start of the season, and particularly now that he had to fill the shoes of injured shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune.

Two glaring mistakes in matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and more recently Cape Town City has seen the Amakhosi faithful lose faith in his ability to guard the goals, which subsequently also prompted the club to go into the transfer market on deadline day.

Chiefs have since brought in Daniel Akpeyi, suggesting that the Namibian international’s opportunities will be once again limited, and he could well lose his place as early as this weekend’s Soweto Derby.

However, Parker has assured that the team are fully behind Vries and feels he will ultimately benefit from the arrival of Akpeyi.

“Virgil is fortunate and blessed enough to have such a family that supports him. He’s an international, he’s a big guy and he’s a family man, so we know he can step up,” said Parker ahead of Saturday's Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

“All he needs is to be fed with positivity and we’re doing that so he can bounce back stronger, and the good thing about football is that there’s always a next-game to rectify yourself and regain momentum again.

“It’s for any player to be a bit worried when the team beefs up in your position – you begin to question yourself and whether you’re doing the right things.

“But we’re professionals and everybody at the club is a top professional, so it’s to accept that this is happening and accept that you need to improve in training and matches and keep fighting.

“To be fair, Virgil has been good apart from those two mistakes against Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City, and I’m sure those are things he’ll look to never repeat again, and we support him.”
