Steve Komphela overlooks Soweto Derby penalty miss, confident of Willard Katsande stay

Katsande fluffed the chance to win the game for Chiefs from the penalty spot on Saturday with his effort - as the trusted and reliable penalty taker at the club – saved by Brighton Mhlongo late on in the game.

“I haven’t spoken to him,” says Komphela in reference to Katsande.

“When we do our preparations at the end of the slide of preparations we always do penalties during the run of play we delegate. We have to do the job for the team and there are three players who are delegated. When a player misses a penalty what else can you do? I am one kind of a coach who has to own up, no blame game and I wouldn’t even point at him missing the penalty.

“I would say to him look, take it and listen [David] Beckham missed it at the World Cup [Euro 2004 qualifiers], Roberto Baggio missed it [1994 World Cup final] and it happened again today. Would you want to see the same scenario? I wouldn’t have wanted to see that because I was desperate to get three points because it was five minutes to go. So going to him now and talking to him won’t change anything, maybe just to go and remind what we have been preaching to the mind-set. Stay highly focused when stakes are high, I think to an extent he played too many pictures in his head. He just needed to focus on one picture and then break it and we would have won the match,” says Komphela.

With Katsande’s deal at Chiefs up at the end of June, his future remains the subject of interest considering that since arriving from Ajax Cape Town in 2011 he is now an influential senior player that Komphela is keen to hold on to.

“We are optimistic that he will stay because discussions are going on and there is a department responsible for such. All that you get as a coach is an indicator that there are a lot positives and we are just waiting for a few to tie down and I don’t have any other idea except him being with us in the coming season and adding the same value that he does consistently,” notes the Chiefs head coach.
