Steve Komphela calls for Soweto Derby respect

Orlando Pirates were held to a goalless draw by Amakhosi as shots on target from both sides came few and far between under the scorching Johannesburg sun, which Khune felt negatively affected the outcome of the match.

Thousands of soccer fans that traveled to the 2010 world cup venue in anticipation of the biggest fixture on the PSL calendar on Saturday, but were left bitterly disappointed with the performance and lack of goals.

Meanwhile, the Kwa-Zulu Natal derby – featuring Mariztburg United and Golden Arrows – and the Limpopo Derby – between Baroka FC and Polokwane City – amassed four goals each this past weekend.

"One thing we need to be very careful about: you cant compare them [other derbies to the Soweto derby]. The immediate comparison is an insult to them [other derbies]. This [between Chiefs and Pirates] is another level",said Komphela.

"Give more to the game, there is a lot we can rectify, but I thought there were a couple of positives to pick out and maybe put one or two negatives, with regards of goals not scored. But I felt there were instances where there was action that side, action this side.

"I cannot imagine a scenario where we say: let's get goals – Chiefs, you don't defend; Pirates has the ball, they run, they hit the net. Okay Pirates, you dont defend; Chiefs has the ball, they run and hit the net.

He added: "Whether we like it or not, as coaches, we have to defend out of possession and attack in possession, and how we attack in possession, I am clear about that; we are all clear about that.

"I am also wary of Pirates, and how we needed to defend. Did we create chances or was the affair in the middle of the park? No!

"There were a lot of box entries, a lot of final third entries; wide and centrally there was lot of stress. I dont think my voice would have gone if it was just a match that we needed to just to go through.

"With due respect, if we can be careful in our comments. I am not saying we should not be slashed – hit as much as you can – but leave something for the game," he concluded.
