Soweto Derby match ratings

Despite conceding three goals, Khune was by far the best Kaizer Chiefs player after making nine saves. Early in the first half his distribution was not his usual best when he kicked the first two balls straight to Mpontshane from the other end of the field. He nervously saved Rakhale’s tame volley on the 18 minute but regained his confidence.

Lebese committed a silly foul, as Khune parried Sangweni’s header from the resulting free-kick straight to Sarr who converts with the Chiefs defence watching like statues. He made another great save from a one-on-one with Gabuza after Mathoho gave away the ball and saved Sarr’s header with his feet, but could not stop Gabuza for the third goal of the match.

With Lebese failing to track down Matlaba, Gaxa was under pressure right through the match with from both Matlaba and Makola. In the second half he tried to push up front, but left Mathoho and Bukenya exposed.

Lost, confused, caught out of position and at sixes and sevens: Bukenya was by far the worst Kaizer Chiefs defender. He gave away ball possession carelessly in the first minute, but Pirates failed to capitalise.

Despite the great header, Mathoho had a poor match. In the 11th minute he did well to and head away Makola’s cross. But he was found wanting on many occasions and his combination with Bukenya did not work out. For the third goal he was turned inside out by Erasmus before the Pirates striker crossed for Gabuza to score.

Masilela’s critical contribution was winning the free-kick that lead to Chiefs’ goal. Despite that, the left-back was not his usual best. In the second half he did well to keep Rakhale at bay.

Not at his usual best – Lebese did not contribute in both defending and attacking. He failed to track down and pick up Matlaba and gave the Pirates left-back space to attack, while he also gave away a silly free-kick that ended in Pirates’ opening goal of the match.

Had a few passes to strikers that ended up dispossessed, but combined well with Tshabalala. With Katsande committing fouls and playing far too deep, Yeye found himself two-on-one against Ntshumayelo and Sarr.

Looked sluggish in the first half and failed to match Ntshumayelo and Issa Sarr. Gave away way too many balls but most importantly did not stamp his authority in midfield and resulted in Letsholonyane doing two jobs.

A fairly good match with flashes of brilliance few and far between. Combined well with Letsholonyane. His well-taken free-kick resulted in Mathoho’s goal. Had a chance to score early in the second half but his free-kick went inches wide.

Abraw could have scored as early as the first minute when he received a pass from Tshabalala. Instead of shooting, Abraw passed to a marked Manqele. When he received passes he failed to bring the midfield to the game.

In and out of the game, but did not get any clear cut scoring chances. He took a shot on target on the 60th minute and midway through the second half did well to set up Abraw, who was intercepted by Ntshumayelo inside the box.

Came on for an ineffective Lebese in the 71st minute.

Came on for Manqele in the 79th minute.

Came on for Abraw in the 87th minute

With Orlando Pirates attacking and putting Chiefs under pressure, Mpontshane spent the first 40 minutes on ‘paid-leave’ as he had nothing to do. But everything changed in the 45th minute when the goalkeeper failed to organise the defence and read Tshabalala’s free-kick which resulted in Mathoho scoring with a well-taken header.

Great match by the Orlando Pirates left-back. Defended well and put Gaxa and Lebese under pressure. In the first half he pushed forward, putting Gaxa under pressure. His combination with Makola on the left caused havoc for the Chiefs defence and he could have scored midway through the first half when he missed a clear chance from an Erasmus cross.

Outstanding performance by Ntsimbi – always cool, calm and collected. He committed an unnecessary foul on Manqele in the third minute. His header which was parried by Khune resulted in Pirates first goal. In the second half he intercepted Abraw’s pass to Manqele inside the box, but later earned himself an unnecessary yellow card when he fouled Abraw.

With Ntshumayelo forcing Tshabalala to play inside midfield, Nyauza was given some free-time but failed to utilise the space and attack the right flank. When Mathoho’s scored, Nyauza was ball watching and at fault but the defender regained his composure.

Confident Makola made his presence felt from the word go, putting Gaxa under pressure on the left. But he gave away a free-kick when he fouled Letsholonyane on the edge of D-line early in the second half but Tshabalala’s free-kick went wide.

Score the first goal of the match and was unlucky not to get his second when his header was saved by Khune’s magic feet. The midfielder, alongside Ntshumayelo, won the battle against Katsande and Letsholonyane.

Not his usual best and made all his moves in front of the Chiefs defence resulting in nothing. He played more inside in the first half and took a tame shot on target in the 18th minute which was saved by Khune. Gave away a free-kick on the 43rd minute which led to Mathoho’s goal. He came to life early in the second half, putting Masilela under pressure but failed to deliver killer passes and crosses for Erasmus and Gabuza.

Kermit Erasmus was always on the lookout for passes and confused Chiefs defenders by dropping deep in midfield to collect the ball. On the 35th minute, he beat Masilela on the right and crossed for Matlaba who failed to convert. Late in the second, the striker produced a moment of brilliance when he turned Mathoho inside-out before crossing for Gabuza to finish.

Came on for Thandani Ntshumayelo on 85 minutes.

Came on  for Thamsanqa Gabuza in the 89th minute.
