Lucas Radebe critiques Soweto Derby stalemate between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

snl24.com/kickoff were privileged to share a suite experience, hosted by Scotch whisky brand Chivas Regal, with the Bafana Bafana legend at the FNB Stadium where Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played to a 0-0 draw.

It was the fourth time in the last five meetings between the two PSL giants that fans witnessed a share of the spoils, and Radebe admitted disappointment at the lack of goals but felt the two sides played some exciting football on the day.

“It looked like it would be a game full of goals, because both sides were attacking and creating chances – Pirates more than Chiefs – which I thought, at this level, should have been converted to goals,” Radebe told snl24.com/kickoff after the match.

“Unfortunately it was another goalless draw, and I’m disappointed about the result but not the game itself, because it was entertaining with quality players.

“I’m still hoping and waiting for that exciting 2-1 scoreline – for somebody to at least celebrate at the end of the game.”

While the game produced some moments of excitement at either end, as both Chiefs and Pirates struck the woodwork, for a match of it’s magnitude efforts on target were few and far between.

The ex-Leeds United captain believes the style of play South African teams have adopted of late is not conducive to scoring many goals, particularly with the absence of an out-and-out striker.

“I think it’s the style of football we play [in South Africa] – there's no outright number nine. I think Paez came on a bit late, because he’s usually brilliant at running at defenders and he’s impressed me before,” Radebe explained.

“But today teams want to pass the ball into the net, which doesn’t work, we need people who will shoot. We don’t need to score incredible goals.

“We know [Mpho] Makola has a good shot on him but he never had a chance – whether it was because Chiefs defended well, I don’t know. But I think they [players in the Derby] didn’t take any of the chances that they should have.”
