Mathoho was sent off in an Absa Premiership match against SuperSport United in August, as Chiefs went on to lose 2-1. The 27-year-old followed that up with another unnecessary sending off in Bafana Bafana’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde in September, which they lost 2-1 after taking the lead through striker Tokelo Rantie.
He was fined for his sending off during the Bafana game.
The former Bloemfontein Celtic central defender gave away a penalty in Amakhosi’s 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, which is perhaps a sign that there is a lot going on in his head at the moment, which could be affecting his game.
Many argue that Mathoho has not been the same since Tefu Mashamaite left Amakhosi, but Komphela believes 'Tower' will get back to his best form because he is a quality player. What he needs, according to the Chiefs coach, is the right support to get through this difficult period.
“When mistakes occur, we own up. When there’s something to celebrate, we share. We are quite aware that he could have done better in some instances and we do talk a lot about such. There is also measures at the club, but one of the critical things in any scenario, when things are not working out for an individual, is to be alongside them to rectify that,” Komphela said during the Soweto Derby press conference in Johannesburg on Thursday.
“Tower will be okay because we know the quality he’s got. We also appreciate your [the fans] patience, even though you are aware of how we are coming through. The support that you give him will go a long way. We want to win him more than lose him because he has the quality.”
Amakhosi fans will be hoping Mathoho will be in good form when they face rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
