Itumeleng Khune says Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns should always challenge for the title

This is the view of Amakhosi captain Itumeleng Khune, who believes they have what it takes to challenge for the trophy they last won under former coach Stuart Baxter.

After the past weekend’s results, the 'Big Three' occupied positions one to three, with Pitso Mosimane’s Sundowns side sitting at the top with a lead of just four points after they played to a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United.

Pirates are in second place after they came from behind to beat Chippa United 4-2 in Port Elizabeth yesterday, while third-placed Chiefs missed out on an opportunity to close the gap to three points when they were held to a goalless draw by Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday.

“It’s very good to see the top three at the top competing. It should be like that every season,” Khune says.

“You go to any other league and you see the top three teams finishing in the top three. I am not surprised because the top three sides have the best players in the country who represent their countries. That’s when we should show how hungry we are to win the championship.”

Pirates and Chiefs will meet in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h30). Both sides need a victory to keep up with Sundowns, so supporters will be hoping they do not play cautious football.

Amakhosi will go into the showdown just a point behind their rivals.
