'If it's not a derby, then let it be Pirates v Sundowns'

South African football legend Tebogo Moloi is holding his breath, hoping his former side Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are not drawn against each other in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

The teams in the mix are Al Hilal (Sudan), AS FAR (Morocco), Pirates, ES Tunis (Tunisia), MC Alger (Algeria), Sundowns, Al Ahly SC, and Pyramids (both Egypt).

Moloi, who has served Pirates as both a player and an assistant coach, believes the time is ripe for Mzansi clubs to face each other in a Champions League final.

"I just hope that Pirates and Sundowns avoid each other," says 'Mashwabane', speaking to KickOff.com.

"As a country, it's time we wake up and understand the level we are at now.

"Some of our teams still don't realise how important it is for us as South Africans to compete at this level. How many times have teams from the Egyptian league faced each other in the Champions League final?

"Imagine if two PSL teams faced off in the Champions League final. It's about time we experience the same as South Africans.

"I believe it could have happened already if we hadn't been in isolation for so long," he adds.

Moloi says the current crop of players need to understand why it is important for them to conquer Africa.

"With Pirates, Sundowns, and Stellenbosch FC qualifying for the knockout stages, this should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to be proud of the progress we've made.

"We are waiting for the quarter-final draw, but I'm crossing my fingers that Sundowns and Pirates are not drawn against each other.

"It has always been my dream to see a Soweto Derby in a CAF Champions League final. If it's not a derby, then let it be Pirates vs Sundowns, or Kaizer Chiefs against Sundowns.

"Let's hope the draw goes in our favour."

CAF are yet to announce the date for the quarterfinals draw for both the Champions league and CAF Confederation Cup, but the games are expected to be played in March.
