Percy Tau's Al Ahly side get huge boost ahead of Sundowns clash

Al Ahly recorded a hard-fought victory over Al Mokawloon that will serve as a boost ahead of Saturday's crucial CAF Champions League fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Club of the Century got back to winning ways with 2-1 win over Al Mokawloon thanks to an early goal by Ali Maâloul from the penalty spot, before Farouck Kabore put the ball past his own keeper.

Mokawloon's John Okoli scored late in the first half to mount a come back but Al Ahly held on to see out the victory.

The win means the Red Devils remain undefeated in the Egyptian Premier League and have stretched the gap between them and second-placed Pyramids to five points.

The win was also the perfect occasion for South African striker Percy Tau, who featured for 87 minutes, to celebrate his inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad for the first time since June 2022.

Al Ahly now turn their attention back to the CAF Champions League where they will face Sundowns for the second round tie of the Group B clash, after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Cairo in February.

The Egyptian giants have so far struggled to stamp their authority in the Champions League group stages, collectingjust four points from their three outings.

"We expect it to be very tough because they [Al Ahly] are also on the back foot," Downs midfielder Rivaldo Coetzee told the club's media ahead of Saturday's clash.

"I don't think they are in the position they want to be in group stages right now, in terms of points, so we expect it to be tough."

The clash will be played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
