Rude awakening return for Ngezana

Hugo Broos will be encouraged to have watched Siyabonga Ngezana playing at the top level on Thursday as he made his Europa League group stages debut.

Ngezana was at the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland as his Romanian club FCSB visited for a Europa League group match, which was watched by a big audience.

There were players from as many as 15 countries on the field from Brazil to England, Scotland, Romania, Nigeria, Albania, Nigeria and South Africa, amongst others.

It didn't end well for Ngezana as they lost 4-0, but notable was that he put in a full shift coming out without a caution.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender partnered Joyskim Dawa in the centre of defence and was without fault against the serial Scottish champions.

Despite the defeat, FCSB remain in contention for a place in the knockout stages having won their opening two matches, with their next two games at home against FC Midtjylland and Olympiakos CFP.

It was the 27-year-old's first match in eight weeks due to injury.

Ngezana had last played club football on September 1 against UTA Arad and will be key in continuing to give FCSB a boost as they climb up the standings in the domestic league.

The Romanian champions – who have a game in hand – are now seven points behind leaders Universitatea Cluj as the league season approaches the halfway stage.

Now back in action, Ngezana will also be available for Bafana Bafana selection for the November FIFA calendar dates.

He missed the games against Congo-Brazzaville due to the same injury.

Despite a slow start to his career at FCSB last season, Ngezana has been a regular at the 1986 European champions and it is for this reason that he has broken into the Bafana squad.
