Amajita coach Thabo Senong plots for Sudan showdown at U-20 African Nations Cup

The countries will meet for the first time at Heroes National Stadium in Lusaka at 15h00, with Group B rivals Cameroon facing Senegal in a simultaneous fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

South Africa are second in the group after a 3-1 win over Cameroon and 4-3 loss to Senegal.

Sudan are bottom following a 1-1 draw against Senegal and 4-1 loss to Cameroon, but still have a chance of reaching the semi-finals of the event.

The top four finishers at the eight-team competition will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, taking place in South Korea from May 20 to June 11.

Senong said: “It is a very tricky encounter that we are facing, more so we have never played them before. We have been analysing them and watched a few of their matches. They rotate their playing formations quite a bit – their approach in the 1-1 draw against Senegal was very different to the 4-1 loss to Cameroon.

“With that said, our approach to the match will be very simple – we need to play to our strengths, we need to focus on what we can do well as a team. We are well aware of how dangerous they can be, especially as they have a slight chance of qualification, but we will be ready. We had a good session with the players yesterday [Friday] where we needed to remind them of their capabilities - we needed to remind them that they are a formidable side and that they can qualify for the semi-finals.”
