Marques was an assistant coach at the club for some time but took over the reins when Gordon Igesund left to join Bafana Bafana some two years ago. In the two seasons with Igesund in charge, Marques helped save the team from relegation before coming close to winning the League the following season, losing out to Orlando Pirates by just two points.
And when SAFA offered Igesund the Bafana Bafana coaching job, Marques was left at the helm of the Dobsonville outfit. The 52-year-old led the Dube Birds to the MTN 8 triumph in 2012, yet it has been a tough two years since, failing to finish in the top eight that same season, before narrowly escaping relegation at the end of the last League campaign.
Rumours were doing the rounds that Marques was going to be shown the door but the coach is still at the club, and is ready to continue to his hard work as his team aim for a better finish this time around.
"There is no mandate given to me by the team management and I am here as long as I want but as a coach I have a target of winning every match we play as a team and we are hoping to do that,” the Birds coach said.
“Last season we did not have a good season and we are hoping to improve on that and we just had a good start as a team.
“On Wednesday we are taking on Amazulu at home and we are hoping to build on the Orlando Pirates result.
“Yes we cannot predict the future but we are determined to continue from here."
Swallows welcome Amazulu to Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday on a high after their 2-1 defeat of Orlando Pirates on Saturday night, while Usuthu will be looking for their first win after a goalless opener against Ajax Cape Town.
