In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff speaks to Mpumalanga-born former Ajax Cape Town striker Sifiso 'Jomo' Vilakazi.
Vilakazi says the nickname Jomo was given to him on his birthday.
Who is Sifiso Vilakazi and where did you play?
"Sifiso Vilakazi is from a small village called Driefontein in Mpumalanga, it's situated somewhere around Piet Retief.
"I remember leaving home for Soweto to play in the Godfrey Moloi Games; and that's where Winners Park scouted me, from there, I went to City Pillars, and Free Stars, Ajax Cape Town, and AmaZulu followed."
What's your nickname?
"Jomo."
Who gave it to you and why?
"When I was born, my brother-in-law, who happened to own a team here in the villages, told the family members, 'Kuzalwa uJomo namhlanje,' so he's the one who gave me the nickname.
"I assume people didn't believe things were going to happen exactly as he predicted. Indeed I became a professional footballer."
Did you like it?
"Yeah, remember Jomo Sono he was the king. And growing up I was also a midfielder. I was named after a hero."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"Everyone called me Jomo. People were surprised to see newspapers calling me Sifiso. I've been known as Jomo since I was born."
If you could relieve it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"Growing up I supported Ronaldo, the one from Brazil. I should have been called Ronaldo.
"But as for the nickname, I think at my younger age I was able to live up to it. I think I was doing very well as a midfielder until I was converted into a striker at Free State Stars."
