In the latest edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Tembisa Classic defender and Highlands Park assistant coach Victor Tshabalala on the origin behind his nickname "Franco Baresi".
Who and where did you play?
"At grassroots level, I played for Tembisa Real Bucs at Under-12. From there I went to Tembisa Wits.
"I was then selected for the interprovincial Eastern Transvaal squad. I was the only black person there. I then played for Benoni Northerns in the Caltex League.
"In 1993, I went to join Witbank Aces reserve side in KwaMhlanga. In 1994 I was promoted to the first team.
"I was a versatile player, I played in every position."

What's your nickname?
"Franco Baresi. The best defender in the world hey. I got it from my days at Gloria FC.
"But when I got into the PSL everybody simply referred to me as Baresi."
Who gave it to you and why?
"Do you remember when Roberto Baggio of Italy missed a penalty during the 1994 FIFA World Cup final? [Baresi also missed one of the penalties].
"There was this guy called Bashin who was one of our strikers, he liked giving people nicknames.
"He looked at how I used to mark, how I used to read the game, anticipation, and he said to me, from now on we are going to call you Baresi. You mark like Baresi."

Did you like it?
"A lot. From there onwards I started following Franco Baresi's game and he was the best defender in the world."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"Sinky Mnisi used to call me Mavaka, I don't know he got that name or his reasons for calling me that, but he liked it."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"There were defenders like Lucas Radebe which I used to admire. They were close to my heart.
"Then Pirates captain Dan 'Dance' Malesela also used to be close to my heart.
"I would have loved my nickname to be any of those two's real names. And more recently OJ Mabizela's name."

Who should we ask for their nickname story?
"Arthur Zwane. I played with him at Classic. Remember his other name is Jabulani.
"His wife loved coming to watch him play, she called him 'Mjapani'. Even now he calls me Mavokorosh and I call him Mjapani.
"I'd like to know where this Mjapani come from."
