Siyabonga Sangweni reveals pain of signing insurance papers upon retirement

Former Orlando Pirates captain Siyabonga Sangweni has opened up about the pain he felt when he signed the insurance papers to end his soccer career.

The 38-year-old ex-Bafana Bafana international was forced into early retirement in 2016 due to a knee injury that he could not fully recover from.

'Nduna' is now back at home in KwaZulu-Natal where he is busy coaching his family team Sangweni United, which campaigns in the SAB League.

Sangweni reveals that he tried everything possible to find a solution to his injury problem, with no success.

"The doctor made the call. I tried to seek different opinions and it came out the same thing. I have to accept it," Sangweni tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"Obviously there is no way you could not feel pain to stop doing what you love most, and that is playing football," he adds when asked how he felt when he was signing the insurance papers.

Sangweni is hoping to unearth more talent in KwaZulu-Natal and get more youngsters to emulate his success in the PSL.

"I am currently involved with coaching. I am coaching the family team Sangweni United playing in the SAB League," he adds.

"The challenge now is most of the players are doing Matric and I must now start from scratch to build a new team, because I always believe in youngsters. At the moment everything has stopped because of the coronavirus."

Sangweni won a treble in his first season with Pirates in 2011/12 and became an important leader in the national team.
