Vilakazi was on the radar of Kaizer Chiefs first before the Brazilians made an official offer on the final day of the transfer window, but no agreement on figures could be reached between the two clubs.
Mosimane reveals that they were close to sealing a deal for the Bafana Bafana international but somehow it never happened.
“Yes, we wanted him and we engaged Wits and the player wants to come to us,” Mosimane says from the club’s coaching clinics in Richards Bay.
“It's not a big secret, otherwise you would not been asking and writing, otherwise he could have said long ago, ‘I’m moving nowhere, I'm happy at Wits.’
“The player wants a different environment hence we approached Wits, properly, not from the boot of a car. We approached them properly but we couldn't agree on figures.”
Mosimane says many players are left disappointed this way in football and says Sundowns won't give up on Vilakazi, and will try again when the transfer window re-opens next January.
“It's not only us, these things happen,” he adds.
“You could see that David de Gea didn't move from Manchester United to Real Madrid because there was never an agreement on figures. It is why it didn't happen, but a player like that of Vilakazi, we will go again and try.
“Man City tried for Raheem Sterling and it was not easy but Raheem Sterling decided, ‘I’m no longer going to train now at Liverpool and I will make sure I go,’ and he did and he left.
“De Gea made it known that he wants to go to Real Madrid but he didn't go. You saw he hasn't played for Man United in the EPL in the first games and so was Luis Suarez when he wanted to move to Barcelona, so S'bu wants to play for us and we want S'bu to play for us.”
Sundowns only signed Burundian striker Fiston Abdul Razak during the off-season but also welcomed back Keagan Dolly and Mogakolodi Ngele from respective loan spells at Ajax Cape Town and Platinum Stars.
