On Friday the KwaZulu-Natal side officially changed ownership to Durban-born businessman Sandile Zungu, who is now the 100 percent shareholder of the club through Zungu Investment Company (ZICO).
During a very emotional media briefing, Sokhela gave a heartwarming handover and revealed his motive behind the shock move.
"I'm very happy that AmaZulu FC will remain here, and for the first I'm going to be open with you," Sokhela told the media.
"For the longest time I've been with the club, I have to tell you this for the first time, and I told my friend Sandile Zungu this morning, I had a stroke, two times.
"The man who has been helping me whenever I had a stroke and throughout my tough journey is Dr Irvin Khoza. He advised me to hold on, but now I can't anymore.
"Because if i get another one in the head, I'm gone, and I told him I can't anymore. I had to go talk to Dr Irvin Khoza again and Sis Mato Madlala to tell them I'm selling the club.
"At some point I couldn't speak properly, I would use Lunga [Sokhela] to communicate for me."
Usuthu is a club that is celebrated and loved by the royal house of the Zulu Kingdom, and Sokhela says he consulted the Zulu King for his blessings.
He also pleads with the supporters to give Zungu the same support they have been giving the Sokhela family.
"I also had a conversation with Isilo Samabandla [Zulu King] and told them about my plan and he begged me to carry on, but I told him that I'm tired and there should be another person to take over from me," he explained.
"When Zungu approached me I was happy and we had a conversation with him alongside Isilo. I wish they can give you the same support.
"I want to tell you Mr Zungu that I will always support you and AmaZulu FC until I die, so I thank you for what you have done for me throughout my hardships, especially Dr Khoza and Sis Mato."
