In the latest edition of Negotiating Behind the Scenes, Flagstaff traditional leader Inkosi Mongi Rula reveals how he was discovered by Bush Bucks.
Who I signed for?
"I joined Bush Bucks in 1992. I was from a team called Faku Chiefs.
"We were campaigning in the old Transkei League. Remember those days Transkei was not part of South Africa.
"I was 19 years old at the time."
How did you find out?
"Faku Chiefs and Tembu Royals were playing a final and Bush Bucks officials came to watch. That's where Bush Bucks saw me."
Where did you meet?
"We played on a Saturday; on Sunday I was on my way to Mthatha. I left with the Bush Bucks officials."
Who was there?
"Mr Pasiya, who was Sturu Pasiya's father, Mr Madikizela and Mr Tampula."
What surprised you?
"To be honest nothing surprised me because my dream was to play for Bush Bucks.
"In 1991 I went for trials at Bush Bucks but failed to make it."
Did you get what you wanted?
"Money was not so important to me those days. All I wanted was to play in the PSL (NSL).
"I wasn't even aware people get paid to play football. My salary was R1000. It was a lot because I had just left school."
Did you see out the contract?
"I didn't sign any contract with the club. Being a youngster, I overlooked all the important things because of excitement.
What I can tell you is that I spent 10 years at Bush Bucks. I left the club in 2002."
What you would change
"I'd make sure I check how long is my contract, and what are the terms and conditions. I played 10 years without a contract."
