In the latest edition of My Muti Story, we hear from Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos legend 'KK' Sono on his brushes with muti during his playing career.
Who and where?
"Muti caused a lot of accidents for me as KK. Every time I used it with Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos I used to experience bad days. Those are the issues that made me not commit fully to football. You know sometimes I used to abscond and not go to Pirates and Cosmos matches to avoid being bathed in Muti. Sometimes I would arrive late to ensure I get there after they finished bathing in Muti. It was tough at Pirates because we had to go on camp."
Why were you doing it?
"At Pirates, they would bathe you in the evening and in the morning. They would even burn some stuff telling us it was going to make us perform wonders on the pitch. All this happened in the hotel. They used to be chased out of many hotels due to the burning of incense."
Who was the muti man?
"We had many muti men we didn't use just one. At Pirates, they had someone who specialised in finding muti men for the club.
"It was the same at Cosmos where we had Mshapa from Giyani as the agent who was tasked with finding the club muti men. He earned more than the players. He used to tell me he earned more than Pitso Mosimane, Thomas Madigage and Chippa Masinga. I remember those days I was earning R500. Our muti man agent at Cosmos earned R1 000 while Pitso and Thomas were earning R800."

What did you have to do?
"Bath."
Did everyone take part?
"Yes, everyone. If you refused, you'd be kicked out of the club. That is why most players didn't last long in clubs."
What stood out?
"No muti can make a club win if that club is not fit. Only a player can help a club win not muti. My older brother [Jomo Sono] is very fond of muti."

What was the result?
"No result was determined by muti, it doesn't work. Sometimes we lose matches having applied lots and lots of Muti to our bodies."
