My Locker Room Secrets: Thobela Bikwani

In this edition of My Locker Room Secrets, former Bush Bucks player Thobela Bikwani reveals all the behind-the-scenes details of his time in the Imbabala changing room.

Whose locker room are we in today?

"Thobela Bikwani, I am a former Bush Bucks player. I arrived in the 2004/05 season. I had just returned from playing overseas."

Who was always late?

"Wilfred Mugeyi. That grootman was always late. That old man was something else.

"At Bush Bucks, we had a certain group comprising of seasoned campaigners who were with the team while it was still called Umtata Bucks.

"That group had the likes of John Maduka, the Mugeyi brothers, Dennis Vukubi, Clement Mazibuko, Vusumuzi Yashe, Mzunani Mgwigwi. All these grootmans behaved as if they owned the club.

"Wilfred Mugeyi never attended training sessions, especially on Mondays we all knew he was not coming. He would tell us straight; you guys can do all the training; we will meet on match-day. Indeed, come match-day he will start and finish the game, and score a goal for the team on top of that."

Any interesting rituals before a match?

"My biggest problem was that I grew up in Johannesburg in the SAFA School of Excellence, though I'm a Xhosa by nature, at Imbabala it was muti all the way. We would normally bathe in muti before a match."

Who was the jokester?

"Dennis Vukubi and Clement Mazibuko. Vukubi was a coach from Congo, Watunda, who used to shout at him at training each time he delivered a bad cross. And to everyone's surprise, Vukubi would shout back in IsiZulu 'Hey voetsek wena what do you know? Me I was coached by Muhsin Ertugral! The coach wouldn't understand what he was saying."

Who was the singer?

"Our goalkeeper Vusumuzi Yashe and Mgwigwi. Those were good singers."

Who was the best dressed and worst dressed?

"It was me, followed by Clement. Don't forget I had just come back from the Netherlands then. I dressed in Armani straight.

"The worst dressed should be Siyabonga Siphika and Vusumuzi Yashe [laughs].Those two you could tell they are from the villages; they had no fashion sense. They would wear these old bootleg jeans."

Rate the coach's team talk

"Trott Moloto. He loves clothes and perfume. He would tell you straight, you see boys if I'm wearing this suit and my Florsheim shoes, don't you dare disrespect me. If you continue playing like this, you are going to bring down my name. I'm one of the best-dressed coaches in South Africa."
