My Dream Team - Walter Khumalo

In the latest edition of My Dream Team, Tshakuma Tsha Madzhivhandila FC coach and former goalkeeper Walter Khumalo chooses the best players he featured alongside during his playing career.

What's your formation of choice?

"Four-four-two. It suited our generation very well, but now I think it is outdated. Today, teams who play 4-4-2 always concedes because they always defend their own goals.

"My first professional contract was with Vaal Professional then, I joined Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic, Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos."

Goalkeeper...

"Walter Khumalo. How can I select a team and leave myself out? A good shot-stopper and a good organiser of his back four. Can play the ball out from the back."

Defenders...

"My Right-Back, I will put Bongani Masangane from Eswatini. He is the Sizwe Motaung type of full-back. He was also good at one-on-ones.

"Left-Back will be Godfrey Ramudzuli. Bekayi Nkunzimalanga, that guy at one-on-ones was difficult to beat. He was the David Nyathi type of defender going up and down to put in those crosses. Also, difficult to beat in one-on-one.

"My first centre-back is Thokozani Mnguni. A good communicator you couldn't beat aerially regardless of his height. He knew how to play from the back.

"Second centre-back is Joseph 'Stimela' Baloyi. A hard worker that made Thokozani's job easy. A good man-marker. Remember with centre-back pairings, one player must be a man-marker, and one must be a game reader."

Midfield...

"Duncan Lechesa. Captain my Captain. He knew how to build up. You would never find him out of position.

"I will pair Duncan with Christopher Netshidzhive. A good and skillful number eight. He knew how to make a team play.

"On the right, I will put another one from Eswatini Wonder Nhleko. Even today, I'm still looking for a winger like him. Just like Monnapule Saleng, he had skill and speed, and he was a team player.

"On the left, we have Vusi Kharivhe. He had pace. Defending was not his thing though."

Strikers...

"Sibusiso Dlamini will come in as a half-nine, that guy used to terrorise defenders. From a distance, you will mistake him for a player. You would dispose of him, and he was a great finisher.

"Off Dlamini it's Mulondo Sikhwivhilu. He was a box player."

Substitutes...

"Goalkeeper will be Amon Phophi. A very good goalkeeper from Venda who lacked experience at the time. He took over when I left Leopards."

"Defender will be Fernando Matola. He passed away in a car accident. He was a utility player."

Midfield...

"This boy Hlompho Kekana, a household name nowadays, grew up here. He was raised by Duncan Lechesa. He joined Leopards at the age of 16, he was still at School in Turf. When Duncan left Black Leopards Hlompho Kekana took over."

Striker...

"Rudzani Ramudzuli. He ended up joining Orlando Pirates. He could score with his eyes closed."

Coach...

"Sheperd Murape is the coach. He was so smart he could easily study the opponent. He gave players that opportunity to express their talent."
