Maphosa struck four minutes from time to cancel out Sinawo Masana's first-half opener for Stars at Tuks Stadium.
The result left AmaZayoni third on the Group B standings with eight points from five matches - a point more than Ea Lla Koto, and three behind current leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who earlier drew 1-1 with Bidvest Wits.
Aces started brightly but suffered a setback when goalkeeper Bafana Nhlapo was forced off the field with an arm injury, prompting the introduction of Cyril Mollo.
Mollo was beaten soon after, as Masana fired home from a tight angle after being released by midfielder Katleho Maphathe.
Masana could have doubled the advantage but he failed to exploit a one-on-one situation after again being put through by Maphathe.
Sello Nephali came agonisingly close to making it 2-0 but his powerful left-footed strike was denied by the cross bar.
Aces then netted in the closing stages through defender Maphosa to salvage a point.
