The 27-year-old passed away in a car accident on Sunday morning, and with the club in mourning, a special request to postpone their fixture this weekend, as well as that of their reserve league side, has been granted.
“The ABSA Premiership fixture between Maritzburg United and Lamontville Golden Arrows, as well as the Multichoice Diski fixture between Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town, which were both scheduled for the 23rd of January 2016, have been postponed until further notice,” read a statement released by the club, who then thanked all those who have shown their support in this difficult time.
“Maritzburg United FC wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the messages of support and condolences we and the Cele family have received since the tragic passing away of our beloved Mondli last Sunday morning.”
Delisile Ngwenya, who was in the car with Cele, was tragically also killed in the accident, with the club conveying their condolences to her relatives and friends.
“The club would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the Ngwenya Family and friends, for the loss of their daughter who passed away in the same accident with Mondli,” the statement read. “Delisile Ngwenya worked very closely with the club, as she was assigned to serve Maritzburg United for the SABC Sekunjalo soccer programme. She worked very diligently in serving the club through the SABC. May her soul rest in peace.”
