Khune on retirement: I refer my story to Messi and Ronaldo

Ahead of the Carling Black Label Cup Final, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has doubled down on his stance regarding retirement, drawing comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Despite his suspension from club activity, Khune is set to captain the PSL All-Star XI team, voted for by football fans to take to a Carling Knockout winner Stellenbosch on Saturday.

Speaking to media ahead of the match, the decorated shot-stopper revealed that he views the match as yet another opportunity to showcase his talent and added that even at the age of 36, he is still hungry for more success.

"I always refer my story to Lionel Messi having won seven Ballon d'Ors (Messi has won eight Ballon d'Ors) and he's still hungry for more," he told journalists on Thursday.

"I always refer to Cristiano Ronaldo having won five Ballon d'Ors and he's still hungry for more – he breaks records left, right and centre. He breaks records in every league he plays in.

You can never win enough as a footballer. I've won four Goalkeeper of the Season accolades in the country, but I still feel that I can win more.Itumeleng Khune on retirement

"Obviously age is not on my side anymore, but I still feel with my experience, I can still achieve and I'll never stop believing that it is still possible.

"Gianluigi Buffon was still number one for Italy and Juventus until the age of 45 and he going strong. So it's up to you as a footballer on how you behave, how you carry yourself and the goals that you set for yourself as a youngster.

"You want to tick all the boxes. I'm still hungry for more success and I have to show it on the field. I cannot only talk about it. I think every time I am given the chance to get on the field I have to show my hunger and how much I want to achieve because you can never have enough."

The match between the All Stars XI will be played at New Peter Mokaba Stadium. Kick-off is at 15:00.
