Shalulile scored 30 goals in all competitions as Sundowns bulldozed their way to their fifth consecutive league title, the MTN 8 Cup, and the Nedbank Cup last season.
"Obviously different roles but he has the same characteristics; gets in very good positions and just needs to take his chances more often and keep things a bit simpler" Kerr adds.
Mahlatsi recently completed from Swallows to Kaizer Chiefs as part of a three-man deal which included George Matlou and Dillon Solomons.
While Matlou and Solomons were with Chiefs for pre-season, Mahlatsi only started training with his new teammates last week after recovering from an injury.
The attacking midfielder joined Swallows from Supersport United in 2020 following an impressive loan spell at the University of Pretoria. He was also of the Bafana Bafana squad at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
With only one goal and one assist in his 23 league appearances for Swallows last season, he hasn't set the league alight yet but Kerr believes it's only a matter of time.
"It obviously comes down to the coaching, different coaches use players differently. He, along with George and Dillon have to now figure out how they can fit into the way Chiefs want to play. It's only a matter of time until he finds his feet and is the great player everyone knows he can be," added Kerr.
Mahlatsi could have his first chance to justify his former coach's faith when Chiefs take on Royal AM on Saturday at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Swallows meanwhile will lock horns with neighbours Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
