Kaizer Chiefs can sink into DStv Premiership relegation playoffs

Swallows FC will be the latest opponents that Chiefs face this week and considering the line of results Amakhosi have produced has been so bad that they have lost to two relegation-threatened teams in the last fortnight, The Birds will feel pumped up to take all the points.

Chiefs sit on 29 points and are just five ahead of 15th-placed Chippa United.

Two of the teams below Chiefs – Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and Maritzburg United – have played a game less and if they win those games in hand will come to within a point of Chiefs.

In as much as Chiefs can still possibly finish in position eight and play in the MTN8 next season, what is of concern is that they are still not safe from sinking into the relegation playoffs mess with just four games remaining.

Six wins from 26 means their standards have dropped to those of Baroka, Maritzburg United and TTM who have also won just as many games this season.

It is for such a low number of wins that Chiefs are sitting in areas closer to those teams than their traditional rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Defeat against Swallows on Wednesday at FNB Stadium would mean Chiefs will be looking over their shoulders with concern.

Baroka and Bloemfontein Celtic can possibly jump over Chiefs this week while Stellenbosch, Maritzburg, TTM and Chippa United can come within either a point or two of Chiefs as well this week if they all get favourable results, with another nine points still to play for.

This means Chiefs are still not safe from the risk of plunging into the playoffs.

So horrible has been Chiefs' season that they have scored less than they have conceded, which is unheard of at Naturena.

After playing Swallows on Wednesday, Chiefs will then have to deal with Black Leopards, Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy.

"Every game is important for us now because we need to win each and every game," says Yagan Sasman.

Chiefs have thrice finished ninth – the position they occupy now – during the PSL era.
