Pirates conceding of goals has been their Achilles heel this season, having managed back-to-back clean sheets just once in 23 Absa Premiership games thus far.
Though they find themselves top of the log – leading Mamelodi Sundowns by a mere goal difference of one, they have often made things difficult for themselves by having to come from behind to claim draws or victories, as was the case against Bloemfontein Celtic on Tuesday.
However, Jele says the self-belief within the team is what always allows them to fight back as they back themselves to score in every match, while last night’s point could have been three.
“We told ourselves as players that we can’t afford to lose the game, and when we conceded the goal everyone had to pick their chins up and work hard,” explained Jele.
“They had one chance and they scored, but we kept the belief in ourselves and played the way we wanted to play, trying to create a lot of chances so we could score the goal.
“Most of the time, when we’re chasing a game, we can score one or two, so we all had the belief that we could still get a point, or even three points, which we didn’t get but we take the point.”
The 32-year-old further accepted responsibility for some of the silly mistakes at the back that have proven costly on numerous occasions this season but vows to improve thereon.
“I think as defenders we have to work harder because we know that there are some silly mistakes that we do at the back that leads to us conceding some of the goals,” he added.
“But, as a team, each and every day at work we’re trying to rectify our mistakes.”
