DStv Premiership match report Bloemfontein Celtic v Mamelodi Sundowns 02 June 2021

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns got back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership with a 2-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday evening.

Sundowns made five changes, with shot-stopper Kennedy Mweene, Andile Jali, Gaston Sirino and Gift Motupa returning while Haashim Domingo was given a run in the line-up.

Celtic were threatening from the onset but they went behind in the 11th minute after Peter Shalulile reacted the quickest to a rebound from Domingo's shot that came off the crossbar and looped it into a gaping net with a towering header.

Siwelele continued to cause problems for the Brazilians as Neo Maema tested Mweene with a free-kick in the 17th minute and Tshepo Rikhotso had a chance to equalise in the 33rd minute after going through on goal but his strike at the near post was parried away by the Zambian.

However, the visitors were much more in control in the closing phase of the first stanza, knocking the ball around but they could not penetrate the Celtic defence and settled for a 1-0 lead heading to the break.

The early stages of the second stanza did not produce a lot of goal-mouth action but goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto almost gifted Sundowns the second goal on the hour-mark, as his clearance from the back ricocheted off Motupa and just missed the open net.

However, the Brazilians eventually doubled their lead five minutes later courtesy of a glancing header by Shalulile, who also got his brace from Lyle Lakay's corner.

Masandawana made a triple change in the last 12 minutes, as Mauricio Affonso replaced Motupa upfront, Mothibi Mvala made way for George Maluleka and Domingo was replaced by Lesedi Kapinga.

Thato Lingwati came close to pulling a goal back for John Maduka's charges in the last seven minutes with a low strike that missed the bottom corner by a whisker.

Masandawana had the attacking momentum in the dying minutes and effectively kept Celtic at bay, as they clinched their 18th win of the season and ended the campaign unbeaten away while Siwelele's top eight hopes came to an end.
