Bernio Verhagen: Former Cape Town City winger and alleged 'fake footballer' arrested in Denmark

Former Cape Town City winger Bernio Verhagen, who has been accused of being a fake footballer, has been arrested in Denmark shortly after being released by a fifth club this year.

Verhagen, 25, was released from a fifth club this year after reports surfaced in Danish media of his alleged fake professional football persona.

It's rare for a second division player to dominate headlines in any country, but the story of the Dutch-Surinamese 'footballer' has sparked widespread interest after his contract with Viborg FF was cancelled after just one week.

According to Danish publication DR, the club was duped into signing the player after a fake recommendation from Ajax and Arsenal legend Marc Overmars, while his alleged agent was said to be part of the same company that represents Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.

While Verhagen has denied all the reports in the Danish media since, his record suggests that at the age of 25, he's failed to register a single professional appearance over his career since leaving Dutch amateur side SC Den Dungen in January.

The globe trotter

With Viborg squad members coming out to suggest that the player was not up to the standard of the Danish second division, questions marks arose over Verhagen's CV.

And according to Vice, several of the clubs he suggested he spent time with have no recollection of the player and have dismissed his claims.

Having been confirmed as a Citizens player during the Absa Premiership off-season on their official Twitter account – and the post since deleted - attempts have been made to reach club owner John Comitis.

However, the former Ajax Cape Town CEO was unavailable for comment at the time of publishing.

Latest Verhagen drama

After coming under immense scrutiny with his several allegations of fraud laid against Verhagen, BT has now reported that he's been arrested and will appear in court on Friday.

It is believed the controversial figure was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and is facing charges of robbery of a customer at a store outside the Viborg railway station.

Meanwhile, the Central and West Jutland Police have also confirmed the Danish club have filed a case of fraud against the nomadic footballer.
