Gamal, 29, is currently on loan at Egyptian Premier League side Tala'ea El Gaish, where he's found his form with six goals and three assists in 14 league games this season.
Having graduated from the Red Devils esteemed academy system, Gamal was developing into one of their key strikers after breaking into the senior national team.
But after winning eight major trophies with Ahly, their decision to rope in Morocco international Walid Azaro as the main striker pushed Gamal towards a loan move when then-Wits coach Gavin Hunt expressed interest in his services.
"I admit that when I found Walid Azaro being a fixed starter at Al Ahly I told myself that I have to leave on loan but choosing Bidvest was a mistake by myself," Gamal told ON Sport FM, as per KingFut.
"I thought I was helping myself this way. I could have chosen an Egyptian Premier League club instead of Bidvest and it would have helped me regain my form."
Gamal who went on to win a league title in Finland after his short stint in South Africa also suggested he feels he can still continue playing for another 'seven' seasons and has challenged himself to rebuild his career.
The 19-time capped Egypt international scored five goals in 19 games for the Students and won the Telkom Knock Out title under Hunt's leadership.
