The Urban Warriors have won just once all season, and languish in 13th spot in the league standings with just five points from their opening six encounters.
A trip to Bethlehem awaits tonight, where Ajax have not won in their last previous 14 games, as they prepare for a clash against Free State Stars – the opponents head coach Menzo first faced as the Cape club’s coach when he took over from Roger de Sa last November.
“Yeah, the bus drive!” Menzo laughs when asked about his memories of his debut, a 1-1 draw in the Free State. “No, but now I’m experienced, so I know what the drive means. Yes, it was my first match in the PSL, and it was a draw. Normally I would have signed up for that, but now I want to come back home with the three points as it’s what we need at this moment.”
Menzo admits his side are desperate for that winning feeling ahead of next week’s tie against Bloemfontein Celtic, closely followed by their Telkom Knockout Last 16 showdown against Polokwane City – the only side they have beaten so far this campaign.
“It’s an important week for us,” he acknowledged. “We’ve got Free State Stars, then Bloemfontein Celtic, and then the Telkom Knockout, so it would be good for us a team, and the players, to get those three points. It won’t be easy, we know, but we have to go for it.
“Six points out of six is what we have to go for. After this we play at home, and at home we must win. But it’s good to be able to win away as well – it gives the team belief. And at home, keep the three points at the end of the week which will make it a great week. But we won’t get those points easily, we’ll have to work for them, and be committed. It’s not impossible.”
Kick-off at Goble Park is set for 19h00.
