Where Are They Now - Jury Bantwana

In this edition of Where are They Now, the legendary Jury Bantwana shares the bizarre story of how a dog bite forced him into retirement.

Who am I?

"Jury Bantwana, I grew up with my grandmother in Orlando West. That was up until my mother bought a house in Tembisa.

"Giant Blackpool signed me from Umzimhlophe Aces from Soweto because I didn't reside for a long time in Tembisa.

"Billy Mandoza Masilo and Pepe Dire are the ones who took me to Giant Blackpool. At the time, I was 21 or 22, if I'm not mistaken. It was in 1988 when I went to Blackpool. In 1989 we won promotion from the OK League back to the NSL."

My playing days

"I enjoyed my football at Giant Blackpool. Yes, I went to Orlando Pirates, and yes, I did join Pirates, but Blackpool had been already sold anyway.

"As a young boy, it was always my dream to play for Orlando Pirates. The day I received a call from Pirates, I didn't even take a bath that day. I just rushed to their offices [laughs]. I was so nervous and excited at the same time."

Did I make money from soccer?

"I didn't make any money. I didn't have a great background growing up. Immediately when I turned professional everybody at my grandmother's house expected something from me, and at that, time I'm only a grandson.

"So that R600 I was earning would run out within two weeks. I had siblings who expected pocket money. So, when that R600 was finished, I had to go back to Coloured Passmore to borrow another R200."

Where I'm living

"I had a house in Dobsonville, I had to come back to my grandmother's place here in Orlando West after experiencing some problems."

Jobs since playing the game

"I think I retired in 1997 at Rabali Blackpool. I played there in 1996, and then in 1997 I was bitten by a dog, it was an injury that forced me into retirement. Famous and popular as I was the dog didn't care. It grabbed my foot, that's how I got injured. Because of that injury, I'd always feel a pain in my foot when it's winter. That's when I decided to hang up my boots.

"From there I sold clothes, which is something I'm still doing even now. It's how I make a living.

"There's also a sports ground that is sponsored by Cashbuild, I look after that facility and Cashbuild are paying me every month to maintain the field."

If I could do it again

"The only thing I would change is the level of my education. When you start out as a professional, you think you are the man.

"You only realise later that you made a blunder. I should have focused more on education, so if I could do it again, I'll go back to school."
