In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates legend Albert "Bashin" Mahlangu on the origin behind his nickname.
For who and where did you play?
"I started playing football in a mine in Ermelo in Mpumalanga province, that mine used to supply the Camden Power Station with coals.
"My father used to work there. There was a football club called Usuthu Pirates during that mine.
"I then joined a football club called Mighty ABC in Wesselton in Ermelo.
"That was up until a certain gentleman, Magic Mavuso recommended me to Western Tigers, which was based in Rosherville."
What's your nickname?
"Bashin"
Who gave it to you and why?
"I got the name from a childhood friend, Maretsi, his nickname was Chauser.
"It's a tsotsi taal we used to speak back in the days, in Ermelo. Thugs used to say to each other 'laat ons bashin', meaning 'let's go'.
"So the name came from that lingo. I used to take defenders with me when I had the ball. That's how I got the name."
Did you like it?
"To be honest, I liked it from the word go."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"Even today, if you ask around using my real name Albert or Bafana people won't know who are you looking for.
"But once you mention Bashin, even four years old kids will take you straight to where I'm staying."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"Look, I won't trade Bashin for anything. Today, every province there are people called Bashin because of me.
"There are Bashins who are drunkards, there are Bashins who are criminals, and there are Bashins who are cops.
"I think I should visit Chief Justice Judge Raymond Zondo and a case against these people because they've been using my name without my permission for too long now."
