Pirates handed boost as key player returns

Orlando Pirates have been handed a major boost with the return to action of a key player ahead of their first match of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The Buccaneers are set for what promises to be a thrilling encounter against Chippa United at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

On the day, they could possibly welcome back Paseka Mako, who has been cleared to return to full training after a year of recovery from injury.

The 30-year-old had suffered a knee ligament knock while on national duty with Bafana Bafana in October last year and returned to light training in August 2024 after undergoing surgery and subsequent physiotherapy.

Speaking to the Orlando Pirates website, the pint-sized defender shed some light on his long journey to recovery.

"I'm so excited to be back on the field," said Mako.

"The journey wasn't easy, but I'm eager to rejoin the team and contribute to the team's success. It's time to push myself. I'm ready to give my all again.

"Thanks to everyone who encouraged and supported me during my recovery."

Still, the speedy wingback will face stiff competition for a starting place.

In his absence, the Soweto giants have recruited Thabiso Lebitso, who had a stellar campaign towards the end of last season, and have recently signed Deano Van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC.

Thabiso Monyane has also returned from injury and will be aiming to make the position his own.

Mako may find chances easier at left back, where Deon Hotto has edged out club captain Innocent Maela in the battle for a starting spot.

Pirates' match against the Chilli Boys is scheduled to kick off at 19:30.
