Pirates’ joyous memories from last trip to Al Ahly's home

When EgyptAir Flight MS 840 touched down at Cairo International Airport on Thursday morning, it had Orlando Pirates' travelling contingent on board for their last match in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Pirates flew overnight from OR Tambo Airport for their assignment against Al Ahly, which will determine who finishes first and second in Group C.

Both teams are already through to the quarterfinals.

This trip comes a decade since they landed in Cairo en route to Suez, where they came, saw, and conquered on the way to reaching the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup final.

That was a semi-final second leg tie, which Pirates won 4-3 on a night of thrills in the seaport city of Suez as they eventually earned a 5-3 aggregate victory.

Having won 1-0 at Orlando, Bucs appeared doomed and out when trailing 2-0 after 54 minutes, but the script took a spectacular twist when they harvested four goals.

Kermit Erasmus curled a beauty just before the hour mark, before Thamsanqa Gabuza sliced through the hosts' defence to add the second.

Thabo Matlaba's adventurous play paid off as he was gifted the third after the Egyptian defence blundered after he pressed them high.

The voices of The Ghost watching on television and scattered all over South Africa were piercing through the screens all the way to Suez.

Though the hosts then equalised to make it 3-3 on the night in the second minute of the referee's optional time, Pirates still didn't sit back despite being already through on aggregate.

Thabo Rakhale found himself with all the space in the world to guide his effort into the net for the fourth after receiving a pass from Mpho Makola.

It ended 4-3 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate with the vociferous Al Ahly fans silenced at home on a memorable Sunday night for the visitors.
