In the latest edition of Negotiating behind the scenes, former Orlando Pirates star Edward Motale reveals what transpired when he joined the Buccaneers in 1994.
Who I signed for?
"Orlando Pirates in 1994. I was from Dynamos."
How did you find out?
"Pirates phoned me. They told me they have finished talking with Dynamos so I must come to their office.
"I asked Dynamos management if it was true, they said yes, and they allowed me to go to talk to Pirates."

Where did you meet?
"In the Pirates offices that were in Carlton Centre."
Who was there?
"Irvin Khoza. He was sitting alone there waiting for me.
"He told me they want my services as they've been following me for quite a while.
"I told him it's all right no problem, I don't have a problem of joining Orlando Pirates. I grew up supporting Pirates so it was an easy decision for me to make."
What surprised you?
"Nothing surprised me really because where I was from, they gave me good treatment.
"The only difference was the money I was now going to earn at Pirates."

Did you get what you wanted?
"There were no negotiations, they just gave me an offer which was good.
"An offer better than the one I had at Dynamos, so there was no need to waste more time negotiating."
Did you see the contract?
"Yes. I signed for two years."

What you would change?
"I don't think I'd change anything. If I had to go back...maybe the only thing I'd change is the salary. I'd ask for more.
"But I must say at the time they gave me a good offer and I agreed immediately."
