In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from former Orlando Pirates and PJ Stars player Sepeke Manamela.
Who and where?
"We used muti at PJ Stars, and at Orlando Pirates, sometimes all we could see was a wet jersey.
"At PJ Stars the club owner used to throw soil on us. Players would form a queue, and the owner would hit us with soil in our legs. That happened in all our games.
"He carried the soil in a Checkers plastic bag. Each time it would be a different type of soil."
Why were you doing?
"You wouldn't dare ask questions."
Who was the muti man?
"The club owner himself doubled up as our muti man."
What did you have to do?
"We just had to pitch up for the match. And those days, we were winning our matches, so we could pretend the soil worked."
Did everyone take part?
"Yes of course. You can't complain, you obey the rules. In football they don't care whether you are a member of the ZCC they just want you to do as you're told.
"At Pirates, the club once brought three muti men at the same time to come and sprinkle some stuff at the pitch. I was shocked. We were playing Manchester United in the Vodacom Challenge.
"And at the time I was still young. I didn't understand what was happening. After that, we were given something that looked like match sticks to put inside our boots. In football, they don't care whether something is uncomfortable to you or not.
"Even after all those efforts Manchester United still beat us by four goals."
What stood out?
"Being able to cope with all that, even though it was all new to me."
