It's Muti Monday, every Monday we get in touch with a former player to share a memorable muti story from their playing days.
In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from former Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic winger Bennet Chenene.
Who and where?
"Since ever I started playing the game all my clubs were using muti [laughs].
"I remember one day at a club I will not mention, I brought my own stuff that was going to help me score goals, when I got there, they said, hand the team's muti to Chenene.
"Eish, imagine having brought my own muti, and now I'm told to use another one. It was now a double impact [laughs].
"We were playing against SuperSport United that day.
"Imagine a club owner who is white telling you to use muti."
Why were you doing it?
"To help the team win. They just told the other guys, Chenene is the one who is scoring goals for us so give it to him so he can score for the whole season. I remember very well the muti was some black stuff.
"I would use different soccer boots for a warm-up and use the other ones that had muti for the match. There was no further explanation."
Who was the muti man?
"I don't know, I just heard the team kit manager telling me the boss wants you to use this muti. And I was scoring those days man."
What did you have to do?
"Smear it on my soccer boots."
Did everyone take part?
"No. Only me.".
What stood out for you?
"The way I was scoring I didn't deserve some of the goals.
Sometimes I'd just stand there, and the ball would just hit me and go in.
"I'd ask myself, what's really happening here?"
What was the result?
"It was 2-1. We beat SuperSport United. I scored the winning goal. It was 1-1 and then scored the second goal.
"Muti does exist in football, but only for a certain time, it's not something that is permanent.
"Muti works against you if use it too much."
