Bucs star hailed: He reminds me of Mesut Ozil

Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has explained why one of his teammates is nicknamed 'Mesut Ozil' and one of the most underrated players in the Orlando Pirates squad.

The Buccaneers have enjoyed a near-flawless start to their season in the 2024/25 campaign, with just two defeats from their 11 league matches so far.

A large factor behind that has been Pirates' prowess in front of goal. Relebohile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi and Mohau Nkota have been some of the biggest contributors to the side's goals, but it is Mabasa who has spearheaded the attack on most days.

Although the striker will get the credit for putting the ball inside the net, he has pointed the spotlight at another key figure in the Pirates' squad.

Kabelo Dlamini has made seven assists this season - a record only bested by Mofokeng with eight assists. Speaking to media at the Soweto derby pre-match press conference, Mabasa explained why

"You know I like calling him Ozil," Mabasa told journalists when asked about Dlamini.

"He reminds me of Mesut Ozil, in terms of his assists, his passes in the final third.

"He is one player that has the ability to make a team tick on the day and is able to influence [the match]. Especially if you play against a team that defends in a low block.

"He has the ability, with his passes - to unlock that defence and create chances for the team.

"So I've had the privilege and the honor to witness that and I've been fortunate enough to be his teammate for years; I think this is our eighth year, if not seventh year together that we have played in the team.

"And you can see it [on the field], I know which run to make and he knows how I want to receive the ball. So he is a very good player and Irate him very highly."

"He is one of the best-attacking midfielders in this country. I don't know why people don't notice that, but eventually, they will see."
