Former Pirates goalkeeper names his Top 5 shot-stoppers

In this edition Of My Dream Team former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Thabang Stemmer lists five goalkeepers he believes are currently the best in the DStv Premiership.

"Remember when Chiefs and Pirates used to produce goalkeepers the national team benefitted," Stemmer tells KickOff.

"There was Brian Baloyi who performed for years, Itumeleng Khune and Senzo Meyiwa.

"So when those teams' goalkeepers perform well it tends to help Bafana Bafana.

"But I can tell you, we work very hard underground because currently, I'm also busy with some project training goalkeepers, especially in schools.

"So, the future of goalkeeping is still bright, it's just that at the moment we are still cooking.

"We need development schools that will only focus on goalkeeping like Buffon is doing in Italy.

"We are not producing a lot of goalkeepers because every youngster when he comes to our development projects, wants to be a Messi or Ronaldo. Nobody wants to be a goalkeeper.

"Here in South Africa, Itumeleng Khune is our last hope man.

"Goalkeeping is what decides a match. If you don't have a strong goalkeeper, you are not going to win the league.

"Sundowns have been dominating because Denise Onyango has been solid for how many years now? The goalkeeping department is very strong at Sundowns.

1) Ronwen Williams [Mamelodi Sundowns]: He's been consistent ever since he signed for Sundowns. He is reliable.

2) Lloyd Junior Kazapua [Chippa United]: That boy is a good goalkeeper. I've watched his game, and his shot-stopping and positioning are very good. He is dominating his area very well; I think he has won the man of the match twice already.

3) Veli Mothwa [AmaZulu FC]: Yes, he might find it difficult to deal with Back passes but you should remember he has been consistent since his days at Chippa United, and it is seldom he makes mistakes.

4) Salim Jamaal Magoola [Richards Bay FC]: That boy is a very good goalkeeper. He's got the presence when it comes to aerial balls.

5) Itumeleng Khune [Kaizer Chiefs]: Since his return to the team, he's been Chiefs the much-needed stability.

I'm one of those who wanted him to be reinstated into the Chiefs line-up.
